AWARE Showcases Galileo EWSS Alerts on Digital Urban Furniture During Second Live Demonstration in France

Last week, on the 4th of November 2025, the EU-funded AWARE project organised its second live demonstration at the JCDecaux premises in Plaisir, France, marking another important step toward innovation in Europe’s public warning systems. The event showcased how the AWARE module, integrated into digital urban furniture provided by project partner JCDecaux, can broadcast warning messages directly in the street, when every second counts.

Building on the success of its first demonstration in Slovenia just two weeks earlier, AWARE once again proved the operational potential of Galileo’s Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS) to deliver alerts through non-terrestrial means. In this second scenario, the focus shifted from rural to urban environments, showing how existing city infrastructure can serve as an immediate communication channel to the public during crises.

The AWARE module receives alert messages via Galileo satellites and transmits them to public warning devices — such as display panels, sirens, and indoor systems — enabling rapid dissemination of visual and audio warnings even when terrestrial networks are disrupted.

The demonstration simulated a severe thunderstorm in the heart of a city centre that triggers a hazardous materials truck accident on a nearby highway. Equipped with the AWARE module, the digital urban furniture were activated after receiving Galileo EWSS alerts broadcast by satellites, warning citizens in the affected area about the danger.

The event brought together representatives from the AWARE consortium, civil protection authorities, political decision-makers and other key stakeholders, who witnessed firsthand how Galileo satellite alerts can be transformed into instant, location-based warnings displayed on digital panels in real urban settings.

This demonstration highlighted the operational capacity and effectiveness of the AWARE module in ensuring fast and reliable public alerts over multiple channels, adding another layer of security for citizens. By displaying warning messages on digital screens, the system ensures that everyone in an affected area can be informed and protected from danger.

AWARE is the first project to integrate Galileo’s Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS) into fixed devices, such as display panels, sirens, and indoor systems —extending public warning beyond smartphones. The project is revolutionising public alerting in Europe, directly contributing to the EU’s Disaster Resilience Goals and reinforcing efforts to deliver timely and accurate information to the right people, at the right time.

The AWARE project, led by Telespazio France, brings together eight partners from four European countries, combining expertise in public warning systems and satellite technologies. Following the successful first demonstration in Slovenia, the Plaisir event demonstrated how the system performs in an urban environment, showcasing the adaptability and scalability of the AWARE solution.
