Background
Densely-populated urban centres can become dangerous environments in an emergency. Without clear communication, panic can quickly turn into chaos during large-scale incidents. Delays in securing dangerous zones can have significant consequences, highlighting the importance of employing a multi-channel approach to alert large populations quickly and effectively.
The demonstration
The second AWARE demonstration took place in Plaisir, just outside the cities of Versailles and Paris. Bustling with locals and visitors alike, and experiencing high levels of traffic daily, urban areas like those make the perfect setting for our demonstration scenario. And thanks to the technology used, the AWARE module clearly showed its effectiveness in alerting people quickly.

The second AWARE demonstration in Plaisir showcased the AWARE module integrated into a digital panel (Digital Out-Of-Home panel) provided by project partner JCDecaux. The demonstration simulated a severe thunderstorm over Paris that triggers a hazardous materials truck accident on a nearby highway. Both instances – the storm and the accident – pose significant dangers to people, and a multi-channel approach to public warning ensures that as many people as possible are alerted on time.
After the AWARE module received the Galileo Emergency Warning Satellite Service alerts, the digital panels were quickly activated to broadcast the warning message in both English and French. From space to the streets, the AWARE module can bring reliable, accurate warnings to people when and where is needed.

This demonstration highlighted the operational capacity and effectiveness of the AWARE module in ensuring fast and reliable public alerts over multiple channels, adding another layer of security for citizens. By displaying warning messages on digital screens, the system ensures that everyone in an affected area can be informed and protected from danger.
The event brought together representatives from the AWARE consortium, civil protection authorities, political decision-makers and other key stakeholders, who witnessed firsthand how Galileo satellite alerts can be transformed into instant, location-based warnings displayed on digital panels in real urban settings.
