Demonstrations

As the implementation of the project progresses, three demonstrations will be conducted to validate the system’s effectiveness and reliability in real-world situations. The demonstrations are based on real-life scenarios and past disaster events, centered on three types of emergencies: an impending natural disaster, an urban emergency, and an industrial catastrophe.

Each demonstration showcases the AWARE module equipped on a fixed device: the long-range acoustic device (LRAD) provided by project partner GENASYS, the digital urban furniture (digital panels) provided by project partner JCDecaux, and the indoor warning devices that are already integrated in indoors infrastructure.

During the demonstrations, the AWARE module receives alerts broadcast by the Galileo Emergency Warning Satellite Service and transmits them onto the equipped device. The events highlight the module’s operational capacity and effectiveness in ensuring fast and reliable public warning through fixed devices. This way, crucial information and alerts can reach the affected population even when telecommunications networks are down or disrupted.

With AWARE, you can be alert when every second counts.

Natural disaster

Between 1998 and 2017, floods affected over 2 billion people globally, and their frequency is expected to rise, posing a significant threat to vulnerable regions in Europe. In Slovenia, the 2023 floods left behind them an enormous trail of destruction, claiming lives and leveling houses and infrastructure. This demonstration shows how the AWARE module fitted on sirens can warn the affected population quickly in times of imminent danger when terrestrial networks are down.

Urban emergency

In urban emergencies, such as large-scale incidents in densely populated areas, timely communication is critical. Delays in securing dangerous zones can have significant consequences, highlighting the importance of employing a multi-channel approach to alert large populations quickly and effectively. In this demonstration, digital panels equipped with the AWARE module will be activated to alert people in the city about a sudden emergency. The AWARE module brings Galileo’s alerts directly in the streets, providing people with crucial information in an emergency.

Industrial catastrophe

On 21 September 2001, a devastating explosion occurred at the AZF fertilizer plant near Toulouse, killing 31 people and injuring over 2,500. Amid a climate of heightened fear post-9/11, disrupted communication networks and contradictory instructions left hundreds of thousands in panic, leading to mass evacuations and confusion until official information was available later that day. This demonstration will show how the AWARE module, equipped on indoor warning systems, can bring satellite-based alerts indoors quickly, alerting the population when an emergency happens.
