On 24 and 25 of June 2025, the AWARE project was present at the Security Research Event in Warsaw. Policy makers, security practitioners, industry professionals and knowledge institutions came together to discuss the security challenges facing the European Union, and how EU-based research and innovation can effectively contribute to addressing them.
At a time of increasing geopolitical instability, rising cyber and hybrid threats, and disasters and disruptions caused by extreme weather events, the civil security of the EU is at a turning point. Under these circumstances, strengthening the preparedness, internal security and strategic autonomy of the EU becomes paramount.
Centered on the theme “Boosting security through EU-based innovation”, the 2025 edition of the Security Research Event emphasizes the importance of homegrown technological solutions in enhancing the EU’s preparedness and response capabilities. At the same time, ensuring the operational uptake of innovative tech solutions is an equally significant aspect of the conversation. The effective implementation of research, corresponding to real needs identified by safety and security practitioners, is a major factor for bolstering the security industry’s competitiveness and streamlining innovation uptake.
Complementing the discussions, an exhibition of over 50 booths showcased innovative projects and key institutions, reinforcing the event’s focus on practical, solution-driven innovation for European security. The AWARE project was kindly invited to join the booth of the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), where we had the opportunity to engage with participants and interested stakeholders about the project’s activities and future plans.
The AWARE project is a prime example of EU-based innovation and technology to strengthen public safety, enhancing public warning by extending alerts beyond smartphone-based messages. The EU-funded AWARE project is developing a module that can receive and transmit alert messages using Galileo’s Emergency Warning Satellite Service. This module can be fitted on display panels, sirens, outdoor acoustic devices and indoor warning systems, providing warning with text, audio and video messages.
The module ensures broader and more reliable dissemination of critical information before imminent and during emergencies, even when telecommunication networks are down or disrupted. In case of a looming threat, the AWARE module will send all citizens in an affected area – indoors and outdoors – a timely and accurate warning, minimising exposure to danger.
AWARE is one of the first projects to utilise Galileo EWSS transmissions for public warnings, introducing a major innovation in public warning systems. It brings together 8 European organisations, whose expertise in the EU Space programme, public warning, technology solutions and public safety contribute to the effectiveness and operational capacity of the AWARE module. By expanding the reach of alert messages, the AWARE project aims to enhance public safety for every citizen in Europe.
The AWARE project consortium extends its warmest thanks to EUSPA for the kind invitation. Our project remains committed to innovation for improving civil security across the European Union.
