Innovating Public Warning Messages with JCDecaux’s Digital Street Furniture

Earlier this year, members of the AWARE Consortium from Telespazio France and FDC visited the offices of JCDecaux in Plaisir – Sainte Apolline, in the Paris region, France. This is where the R&D lab of JCDecaux is located, as well as an outdoor exhibit area, showcasing the various street furniture and many innovations of the Group.

JCDecaux is a French family-owned company founded in 1964 and the No.1 outdoor advertising company worldwide. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of people wherever they live in cities, and where they work, shop and travel by offering innovative, sustainable street furniture and services that meet citizens’ needs and expectations. These services in cities are financed by brand advertising.

As part of its activities, JCDecaux operates a worldwide network of Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) street furniture with +35,000 digital assets in 68 countries, which allows contextual, real-time display of information from city authorities and brands. Thanks to its knowledge, expertise and worldwide network, JCDecaux contributes to the AWARE Consortium by helping specify and integrate the Galileo Emergency Warning Satellite Service in its DOOH panels, expanding the scope of AWARE and broadcasting warning messages directly in the streets, where and when it is needed.

JCDecaux already has an experience with emergency warning messages, displayed in Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, France or Japan, in situations ranging from nature-derived disasters to public safety messages and alerts.

The visit from representatives of Telespazio France and FDC was the opportunity for them to discover and experience what warning messages on digital street furniture would look like, as well as the integration of Galileo EWSS into JCDecaux environments.
